CCAM Hosts its Second National Manufacturing Day

CCAM joined thousands of manufacturers across North America for National Manufacturing (MFG) Day, on October 5, 2018, to show the public what modern manufacturing looks like and inspire the next generation of skilled workers.

102 visitors attended CCAM’s MFG Day. Over 40 juniors and seniors from Dinwiddie High School and Prince George High School attended, as well as students from Southside Virginia Community College and John Tyler Community College. University participants included: the Universtiy of Virginia, Virginia State University and Virginia Tech. This was the second year in a row CCAM has hosted a National MFG Day.

CCAM’s MFG Day attendees received a CCAM facility tour including demonstrations on: mobile robotics, the digital factory, and machining technology. Speaking on ‘Manufacturing Careers’ was Kyocera’s Aerospace Projects and Research Manager, Andy Greaves; and CCAM’s Machinist, Johnny Capps. Attendees heard a from a panel of current and past CCAM interns and were able to network with participating colleges and universities regarding higher education and career opportunities. The event included a virtual reality tour and drone exhibit. The goal of the day was to allow students to learn about the different educational pathways that can result into a stimulating and lucrative career in manufacturing.

National MFG Day was created by Founding Partner Fabricators and Manufacturers Association, in 2012. Organizations including the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), the Manufacturing Institute (MI), and the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) have each played a vital role in working with FMA to successfully grow this national celebration of all things manufacturing.

MFG Day is now produced annually by the NAM with key contributions and support from the MEP and the MI.

The NAM is the preeminent U.S. manufacturers association, as well as the nation’s largest industrial trade association, representing small and large manufacturers in every industrial sector and in all 50 states.

MFG Day addresses common misperceptions about manufacturing by giving manufacturers an opportunity to open their doors and show, in a coordinated effort, what manufacturing is — and what it isn’t. By working together during and after MFG Day, manufacturers will begin to address the skilled labor shortage they face, connect with future generations, take charge of the public image of manufacturing, and ensure the ongoing prosperity of the whole industry.

MFG Day is designed to amplify the voice of individual manufacturers and coordinate a collective chorus of manufacturers with common concerns and challenges. The rallying point for a growing mass movement, MFG Day empowers manufacturers to come together to address their collective challenges so they can help their communities and future generations thrive.
